Material coverage
Paint Coverage per Gallon Guide
Paint coverage depends on substrate, porosity, application, number of coats and manufacturer. Use published product spread rates rather than treating any generic coverage number as a guarantee.
| Planning quantity | Method | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Paintable area | Net wall/ceiling sq ft | Subtract only confirmed nonpaintable openings |
| Coats | Area × coat count | Primer and finish coats may differ |
| Gallons | Total coat-sq-ft ÷ product coverage | Use product technical data sheet |
| Waste | Allowance on gallons | Spray loss, texture and touch-ups vary |
Before using these quantities in a bid
- New drywall primer and finish coats are separate products.
- Strong color changes and high-porosity surfaces may need additional coats.
- Compare real supplier pricing before preparing a bid.
