Material coverage
Roofing Squares and Bundle Coverage Reference
A roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Shingle bundle coverage is manufacturer- and product-dependent.
| Reference | Conversion | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| One roofing square | 100 sq ft | Measure actual sloped roof surface |
| Roof squares | Roof sq ft ÷ 100 | Add separate allowance for cuts and layout |
| Shingle bundles | Roof sq ft with waste ÷ sq ft per bundle | Use bundle label / manufacturer |
| Starter and ridge | Separate products | Do not assume field bundles include accessories |
Before using these quantities in a bid
- Steep slopes, hips, valleys, dormers and roof complexity affect waste.
- Confirm coverage and fastening specifications with the product manufacturer.
- This does not constitute a full roofing materials takeoff.
