What Is a Takeoff?

A construction takeoff (also called a quantity takeoff or material takeoff) is the process of reviewing construction drawings — blueprints, plans, specifications — and calculating exactly how much of each material is needed to complete the project.

"Takeoff" refers to "taking off" the quantities from the drawings.

What Does a Takeoff Include?

A complete takeoff lists:

  • Linear quantities: feet of framing lumber, pipe, conduit, baseboard
  • Area quantities: square feet of drywall, flooring, roofing, paint
  • Volume quantities: cubic yards of concrete, fill dirt, gravel
  • Count quantities: number of doors, windows, light fixtures, outlets
  • Why Does It Matter?

Your estimate is only as accurate as your takeoff. If you miscalculate how much drywall you need, you either run out mid-project (expensive emergency order) or over-order (wasted material and money). A 5% error on a $200,000 project is $10,000.

    Traditional Takeoff vs. AI Takeoff

Traditional: Print plans → measure with a scale ruler → count manually → enter into spreadsheet. A skilled estimator can do a full residential takeoff in 4–8 hours.

AI Takeoff (VegaEstimating.ai): Upload blueprint PDF → AI reads dimensions and room data → quantities calculated automatically → estimate ready in minutes.

The output is the same. The time investment is 32 times less.

    Who Needs Takeoffs?

  • General Contractors: To price the whole project before bidding
  • Subcontractors: To price their specific trade scope
  • Homeowners: To understand what their renovation will realistically cost
  • Architects and Engineers: To validate design decisions against budget
