Flooring Estimating 101: How to Calculate Materials for Any Floor Type

Vega Estimating Team·May 10, 2026

The Basics: Square Footage First

All flooring estimates start with accurate square footage. Measure length × width for each room. For irregular rooms, break them into rectangles and add them together.

Pro tip: Always measure to the wall — not to existing flooring or baseboards. You're installing to the wall.

Waste Factors by Floor Type

Waste factors are where most flooring estimates go wrong:

  • LVP / Laminate straight lay: 10%
  • LVP / Laminate diagonal lay: 15%
  • LVP / Laminate pattern (herringbone, etc.): 15–20%
  • Hardwood straight: 10–12%
  • Hardwood diagonal: 15%
  • Hardwood pattern: 15–20%
  • Ceramic/Porcelain Tile straight: 10%
  • Ceramic/Porcelain Tile diagonal: 15%
  • Ceramic/Porcelain Tile pattern: 20%
  • Carpet: 10–15%
  • Material Cost Ranges (2026 National Averages)

  • LVP (luxury vinyl plank): $2.50–$5.00/sqft material
  • Engineered hardwood: $5–$12/sqft material
  • Solid hardwood: $8–$15/sqft material
  • Ceramic tile: $1.50–$5/sqft material
  • Porcelain tile: $3–$10/sqft material
  • Carpet: $2–$8/sqft material
  • Don't Forget Installation Costs

Material is only half the estimate. Installation labor:

  • LVP: $1.50–$3.00/sqft
  • Hardwood (nail-down): $3–$6/sqft
  • Tile: $4–$8/sqft (more for patterns)
  • Carpet: $0.75–$1.50/sqft
  • Transition Strips and Underlayment

    Always include:

  • Underlayment: Required for most floating floors — $0.25–$0.75/sqft
  • Transition strips: One per doorway — $15–$40 each installed
  • Stair nosing: $25–$60 per stair if applicable
